What is volunteering?

Volunteering is about giving your time and energy to a good cause. You don’t get paid, but you do get to use your talents, develop skills, and experience the pleasure that comes from making a real difference to other people’s lives.

Do good, feel good

Thinking about how you want to benefit from volunteering is a good start to finding an opportunity that’s right for you.

  • Gain confidence. Volunteering can help you gain confidence by giving you the chance to try something new and build a real sense of achievement.
  • Make a difference. Volunteering can have a real and valuable positive affect on people, communities and society in general.
  • Meet people.Volunteering can help you meet different kinds of people and make new friends. Be part of a community. Volunteering can help you feel part of something outside your friends and family.
  • Learn new skills. Volunteering can help you learn new skills, gain experience and sometimes even qualifications.
  • Take on a challenge. Through volunteering you can challenge yourself to try something different, achieve personal goals, practice using your skills and discover hidden talents.

Alternate Saturday Evening Volunteer

  • Suitable for: 18 plus
  • Description: We run a really busy, vibrant social club for adults with learning disabilities every other Saturday evening 7 – 9 pm. We do a variety of things to keep our members busy and amused! This could be running a karaoke session, dance off, pool tournament or game of bowling (or one of a hundred other things!) or just as importantly it could be having a cuppa and doing a jigsaw with someone who finds it hard to join in. If you would like to help with our group on a regular basis, please get in touch!

Basic scooter/wheelchair maintenance

  • Description: Could you help provide basic maintenance and cleaning to our fleet of scooters and wheelchairs at Shopmobility? You will be responsible for pumping up tyres, lubrication of working parts, adjusting positions. Friendly office, flexible working hours to suit.
  • Skills Required: No previous experience required. Practical minded. Able to undertake tasks indepdently.


Befriender

  • Location: Various locations throughout Poole and Bournemouth
  • Organisation: Royal Air Forces Association

  • Suitable for: 18 plus
  • Description: Can you help reduce isolation and loneliness, by giving time to listen to people either in person or over the phone? You would be helping the beneficiary to develop social networks and also introducing them to community groups and activities to ensure that they remain part of the community and feel socially connected to the wider family.
  • Skills Required: Volunteers need to be good listeners, patient and helpful, with an ability to proactively undertake research about their local area to aid others.


Bookshop Assistant

  • Description: After training, your role will include helping customers, taking orders for books, checking donations of books and keeping the shop tidy.

Caretaker

  • Description: This voluntary position involves general cleaning up and tidying of community space, moving furniture and setting up/clearing away after community activities. The role is a flexible one which would suit one or more people sharing duties.

Charity Shop Volunteer

  • Location: We have charity shops in 7 locations: Poole, Kinson, Upper Parkstone, West Moors, Ashley Cross, Tuckton and Ringwood.

  • Description: As a volunteer, you will be part of an enthusiastic and dynamic team that works hard to make our store a great success. Your role will be varied and interesting and could include sorting donated items, preparing clothes for sale, merchandising stock on the shop floor, assisting customers with their purchases and serving at the till.

Children’s Activities Assistant Coach

  • Description: As a children’s activities assistant coach, you will be assisting with our Super Saturdays activities which are open to children aged 4 to 14 and include gymnastics, trampolining, ballet, badminton and street dance.
  • Skills Required: This role is ideal for anyone completing their DofE Award. Some experience of working with children is desirable.


Come talk with me Volunteer

  • Location: Southbourne
  • Organisation: YMCA Bournemouth
  • Times: 9.30am – 11am and 1.00pm – 2.30pm.

  • Description: To help run our Come talk with me sessions including to: * Setting up and packing away * Assist children with their care and learning * Observe children’s development, liaising with practitioners where necessary * Report safeguarding concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) * Support with general housekeeping duties * Assist in preparing food (where trained).

Community Fundraising Volunteer

Conservation Management

  • Description: An opportunity to join a volunteer work force on Thursday mornings working on conservation management activities such as using hand tools, scrub removal, reed bed cutting and burning. The work tasks change throughout the year with the seasons and are completed in all weather conditions.

Conservation Volunteer

  • Description: Do something positive for your local “wild patch” and meet people, being in the fresh air and exercising in beautiful natural spaces helps. Practical volunteering (wildlife recording and monitoring) takes place on the second Thursday of the month.
  • Skills Required: You must be quite fit and don’t mind getting your hands dirty.


Customer Service Assistant

Health Walks Assistant

  • Description: BH Live lead a health walk from Churchill Gardens every Tuesday at 2pm. The walk lasts between 45 – 60 minutes and we require volunteers to assist with the walk, by welcoming people and chatting to participants during the walk.
  • Skills Required: Polite, friendly and an interest in walking.


Healthwatch Champion

  • Description: At a local level, local Healthwatch works to help local people get the best out of their local health and social care services. Whether it’s improving them today or helping to shape them for tomorrow. Local Healthwatch is all about local voices being able to influence the delivery and design of local services. Not just people who use them, but anyone who might need to in future. Anyone can offer to be a Healthwatch Champion. All you have to do is be ready to promote Healthwatch in your local community & encourage people to share with us their experiences – good or bad – of health and care services with suggestions as to how things could be improved.

Photography Volunteer

  • Description: We are always in need of fresh images here at the Russell-Cotes, whether that includes pictures of collection items or exhibition, pictures of our staff & volunteers in action, or photographs of our visitors interacting with the museum. We are looking for someone with the confidence and photography skills to be able to support our marketing and archive work.
  • Skills Required: Good photography skills. * Good interpersonal skills and an approachable manner. Willing to learn about the museum and what we do.


Play and Learn Volunteer

Real Time Patient Survey Volunteers

Retail Assistant

  • Description: Tasks within the shop include sorting and pricing a variety of goods, general customer service duties including till work, serving customers, ironing and steaming clothes, arranging and displaying goods, assisting in the choice of purchases etc.
  • Skills Required: No previous experience is necessary, but you must be willing to learn as full training will be given.


Retail Volunteer

  • Description: Can you spare a few hours per week? Each of our charity shops urgently need volunteers with retail experience. Safety Centre Education Guide

Various Volunteering Opportunities

  • Description: A not-for-profit project selling discounted electrical and household goods donated from local people & businesses to the general public. Volunteer at the Shelley Theatre

We have lots of varied interests with the opportunity to build a rewarding and varied role within a dynamic group from 18 to 80+ years young.

Volunteer Football Coaching Assistant

  • Description: BH Live is running family football session on a Tuesday, 5pm – 6pm and an adults football session on a Friday at 6pm – 7pm in Churchill Gardens, Boscombe. We require volunteers to assist with coaching and making up team numbers.

Volunteer Helper/Grower/Faciliator:

  • Suitable for: Under 18’s need to be accompanied by an adult or arranged drop off and pick up.
  • Description: A community food growing project, aiming to help grow a sustainable community through training people how to grow food and feel confident to do so.
  • Skills Required: No real skills required just a willingness to have a go and get your hands dirty. Food growing experience would be useful but not essential.


Volunteer Supporter

  • Times: Daytime (am/pm)
  • Days: Monday to Friday
  • Suitable for: 16 plus
  • Description: We are looking for happy, enthusiastic individuals to help us deliver a fantastic service to the members of our clubs. We ask for help in ensuring the venue is safe and welcoming for our members; this will include setting the room up appropriately, helping any members with limited mobility, engaging with our members and helping with the activities and refreshments. You may also have a specific skill or interest you would like to share with our members; we’re always on the lookout for new activities – if so we’d be very interested to hear from you!
  • Skills Required: We ask for a commitment of up to 4 hours of volunteering per week and require two satisfactory references and an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Ideally, you will be a team player, happy to get involved in any aspect of the meetings whether that’s meeting and greeting, providing refreshments to the members or encouraging engagement of the activity.
